In Trondheim on 28 November 2025, Professor Leighton gave the opening invited address on the potential health effects of ultrasound on humans to the inaugural meeting of Norway’s “Team Noise”. He outlined what guidelines should be used when assessing the safety of existing, new or proposed technologies that expose people (users, patients or the public etc.) to ultrasound, and how those guidelines should be interpreted.
The meeting was run by Norway’s only group to teach a degree course in audiology for the country. The group have been funded to increase knowledge and expertise on the health effects of exposure to manmade sounds on both humans and animals.
Other topics of interest to the group include the effect of wind farm noise on the health and migratory patterns of reindeer, since these are so key to the indigenous Sami population in a Norway.
